Kang Chiao High School Students and Parents Join Coral Restoration Effort to Protect Marine Ecosystems
To support marine conservation, students and parents from the Sustainable Campus Life Club at Kang Chiao International School in Linkou, along with renowned environmental advocate “Coral Mama” Chen Ying-Ling, participated in a coral restoration initiative on June 15 in Gongliao District, New Taipei City. The team planted dozens of coral seedlings in a rehabilitation pool, hoping they will flourish and provide essential shelter for diverse marine life.
Combining the school’s club values with its life sciences curriculum, the participants engaged in both coral restoration and coastal cleanup activities along the abalone pools. The group upheld environmental responsibility by abstaining from sunscreen use throughout the event to avoid harming water quality and coral growth.
Wu Yu-Lun, president of the Sustainable Campus Life Club, shared, “Coral reefs are incredibly rich in biodiversity. This is our second year participating in coral restoration. It’s not only meaningful for protecting marine habitats, but also allows us to understand the challenges of underwater work.”
Marine conservation has become a global priority. The 14th goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasizes the importance of conserving and sustainably using ocean ecosystems to preserve biodiversity and prevent marine degradation. Increasing the proportion of protected marine habitats is essential to ensuring that ocean resources can be sustainably used by future generations.
However, due to human activities and the ongoing climate crisis, marine species face mounting threats. “Coral Mama” Chen Ying-Ling noted, “Rising ocean temperatures, acidification, marine debris, and overfishing are all stressing the ocean. Marine resources are no longer inexhaustible—they must be carefully managed and regulated.”
Coral reef ecosystems are among the most productive on Earth, supporting over 25% of all marine species, which rely on reefs for feeding, shelter, breeding, and even spending their entire life cycles. Coral bleaching is a stark warning that the surrounding environment is deteriorating and the reefs are dying.
Chen emphasized, “Through coral restoration, we hope to raise public awareness about the vital role of coral reef ecosystems. These actions can foster greater appreciation for marine habitats and inspire students to develop a strong sense of volunteerism. By providing nature-loving youth with meaningful opportunities, we empower them to take local actions that contribute to the global movement to protect our planet.”
